Always try out a running shoe before buying. You can always go to your local store, try it out get advice and shop on the internet to get the best price.
Go to a specialist sports store to fit it on and get advice.
Consider your weight, health conditions (specially the health of your knees and ankles). Go for a better support.
Tow length. This is the distance between the longest toe and the front inside of the shoe. About a thumbnail extra length is useful. This is to allow any swelling that happens while running. You may have to go one size up from you regular shoe sizes. However walk around the store and ensure that you don't trip on the extra length. It may need some getting use to.
Adequate toe width so the toes and the feet are not cramped up. Need to be able to wiggle the toes. This will prevent you blistering up.
The right arch is critical. The is for support and stop cramping out. Discuss this in detail with the expert store you will visit. Some even have tools to help you with this.
Avoid seams if you can. Seams can blister you feet, rubbing against the skin.
The shoe needs to hold firm. Even jog around the store to ensure it feels right.
Consider the weather it will be used in. Even get one for cold and hot weather. My wife has done that due to her sensitivity to cold weather.
Reflectors are good add on if you run in the dark. This provides extra visibility.
Looks and colour shouldn't be a factor, is the technical advice. However include that in your decision if that matters. If you feel good in it , you will do running more often.
